Twitter Adds ‘Unification’ Feature

The social media platform revealed this week that Twitter is working on a “unification” feature that will allow people to remove themselves from conversations they no longer want to be part of. This new feature was revealed by the Twitter Safety account, and as such, is intended to be a tool that allows the user to protect their safety while using Twitter. The feature that was introduced last year is currently in beta phase, and while it isn’t widely available just yet, it is available on the social site’s web browser version.

The Unmentioning revelation came from the Twitter Safety tweet below which included a brief demonstration of how this feature works. When someone tags you in a Tweet, you can select the “More” option marked with the three dots in the top-right corner of the Tweet in question where you can usually block, report or take other actions. With this new feature turned on, you will now see the option to “leave this conversation”.

Selecting this will not remove your Twitter address from the tweet, but it will remove the hyperlink from it that allows people to visit your profile quickly. Even better, though, is that you won’t receive any more notifications for that particular Tweet.

This type of feature is one that people have requested more than once over the years for a number of reasons. Sometimes the tweets get a lot bigger than expected with those mentioned early in the tweet’s life and then exposed to all kinds of notifications about conversations they are no longer interested in. Other social media platforms like Facebook, for example, already have an option for users to remove themselves from tags within comments to avoid this kind of problem.

When this feature was introduced to the public last year, it was originally used with the term “unmention” even in the menu options that users can view. This was seen as very confusing, Twitter confessedso it has now been changed to the more succinct “leave this conversation” option mentioned earlier and described above.

This new feature also follows the announcement from Twitter that it is working on an option to edit tweets. It is unclear how exactly this will be implemented since it can contribute to misinformation or other difficult situations. This consolidation feature appears to be going a bit better than the edit option based on the responses so far, but it remains to be seen how and when either will be fully released.
